Lufthansa 747-8 business class
I could not have been more excited for this flight. I’m a big plane nerd, and the prospect of flying from Frankfurt to Los Angeles on the iconic upper deck of the 747 was a dream come true. Here’s what I thought of this bucket-list experience.
Plane: A
I mean, how could I give it anything other than an A. Getting on board, walking UP STAIRS, and seeing the intimacy of the upper deck that I had dreamed of for so long was just phenomenal. The 747 flies like a charm, and there was barely any turbulence whatsoever on this 11 hour flight.
Seat: C+
It really does pain me to say this but the Lufthansa business class product is just way out of date. If you were to fly Lufthansa business class though, the only way to do it where it’s worth the money is on the upper deck of the 747. The cabin is laid out in a 2-2-2 formation, but on the upper deck, it is just a 2-2, which makes it feel just that much more private. Plus, there’s storage bins by the window on the upper deck, which is the only storage options the seat really provides. The seat itself is also a bit too narrow for what you’d expect, but there is plenty of leg room to go around. Also, with the 2-2 formation, if you are by the window and the person next to you is sleeping, you gotta straddle them to go to the bathroom. Not ideal. Thankfully, no one sat next to me, so I was all Gucci.
Entertainment: B-
The screen is solid, not on par with a Qatar or ANA, but solid nonetheless. And there is a good variety of movies that kept me entertained for the duration of the flight.
Food: B
It was good. Nothing incredible, but not bad at all. I also was getting hazed with wine basically, so I was not really caring about how the food tasted. I did appreciate the German beer and pretzel snacks though mid-flight. That shit slapped. Germany!
Service: B-
The flight attendant were a bit all over the place, and not nearly attentive enough. They didn’t care much for their job it seemed like, but, at the end of the day, they did just fine. Not impressive, but sufficient for sure.
Overall, the actual business class product itself is bad. The lounge was way too packed. The seats are narrow. Not a whole lot of privacy. And if you are unlucky enough to sit downstairs business class, you’ve got minimal storage and a crowded feel. BUT, being on a 747, and being on the upper deck made it all very much so worth it.
