Sukhothai

Sticking with the cultural theme in Thailand, Sukothai is the big big boy in the game. Getting here is not quite as easy, but the scale and significance of the temples is slightly larger than Ayutthaya. Fly to Phitsanulok, rent a car, and drive another hour another ancient capital, Sukothai. Here’s what we did on our weekend trip out here.

Where to stay: Sriwilai Sukhothai Resort

This hotel was very well located with cute decor, a stunning and large pool, beautiful grounds in the shadow of temples and solid service. They also provide free bike rentals which is really the only way to experience Sukhothai. I really enjoyed our stay here and would highly recommend it.

Which temples to hit:

Honestly, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya are tough to blog about because the essence of these cities is to simply get a bike and stumble from temple to temple. There are dozens of temples around these cities, and this is especially true for Sukhothai which has an entire historical park that is perfect for biking. Just be sure to bring cash for the entrance fees to all the temples. But the must see temple, the star of the show here is Wat Mahathat. That’s the place you feel like you’re in the famous Cambodia and Bali ruins. So just get a bike, and go to every single temple in a day. You’ll be exhausted, but hey, you’re only here now.
