The Cape, Cabo

Oh boy had I been waiting for this one. The Cape is a Thompson Hotel by Hyatt and has been high up on my bucket list of places to visit for a long time. I finally got the chance to visit for my birthday, and here’s what I thought.

Location: A

This is one of the main reasons I had been keen on staying at this hotel for so long. It’s close enough to the main center of Cabo San Lucas while feeling a world away. Just a 10-15 minute drive (depending on the direction you’re driving) and you’ve got all the amenities of Cabo San Lucas you want, while staying in complete seclusion. The beach here is still not quite swimmable (as are the beaches in Cabo San Lucas), but there are some smaller coves and hidden areas to discover here, which is fun. Plus, if you surf, this is one of the best spots in the area (but also dangerous with the rocks, so you better be a damn good surfer).

Rooms: A-

Another driving force for my desire to stay here is the beautifully designed rooms, and they did not disappoint. The views from all rooms are incredible, as you can see the world famous Arc off in the distance from your hammock/outdoor bed. The copper bathtub is beautiful, albeit became a bit of a bummer with the water getting all over the place in the room itself. There’s a too-small-for-two-people vanity, but a solid amount of storage, couple chairs and a desk. Overall, a beautiful room with even more beautiful views.

Dining: A

Their rooftop bar is one of, if not the most beautiful bar in all of Cabo, so even if you aren’t staying here, its worth checking out. Combine that with some fire drinks and great music, and you have one of the best spots in the area. Manta, the main, fancy shmancy restaurant here, serves up incredible high-end fusion of wild dishes and a combination of flavors. We also had some sushi by the beach, a fantastic coffee from the coffee bar by the lobby, and drinks at the swim up bar, all of which were amazing. Absolutely zero complaints about the F&B here.

Amenities: A-

There are two pools, one with a more natural feel and the other with a swim up bar and infinity edge overlooking the cape. The beach area has a few lounge chairs and cabanas, as well as some water sports (weather permitting) for rent. The gym is in a beautiful standalone building, although I did not get to use it during my stay. The concierge here hooked us up with a jets experience which was a fun time, and can organize plenty of tours during your stay. There is also a spa which looked beautiful, but we did not get to try that out either. While the amenities here isn’t quite on the level of the Waldorf Pedregal or the One and Only Palmilla, it definitely packs a bunch as the smaller size hotel it is.

Service: B+

It wasn’t anything particularly special, and pool service was definitely on the slow side, but they get it done and with a smile. For the price, I expected a higher level of attention to detail, but I didn’t mind what I experienced at all.

Scene

It was an interesting combination of cultures and people, although it did seem to be mostly couples. You won’t find any raucous spring breakers here and you won’t really find many families either because this is a nicer, more romantic hotel. With that, it still did have that more fun energy you want to find in Cabo San Lucas, which I loved. There was a wedding the day we left, which is quite common here, and we really wanted to stay an extra night just to get our boogie on with them.

Did this hotel live up to my high hopes. Yes, it absolutely did. The Cape is a step above hotels like the Viceroy and Nobu, but a step below the Pedregal (which truly is one of the best hotels in the world). If you’re looking for a place to stay in Cabo with a significant other, I would say look no further than The Cape.
