Marriott Sukhumvit 57

I had a week to spare between my first apartment and my second (well, townhouse shared with friends, its dope). So I decided to find a hotel close to work, and the Marriott Bangkok Sukhumvit Soi 57 did the job perfectly. And at $40 a night for a 4-star hotel room, I was chilling.

Location: A-

For me, it was ideal, because it was about a 15 minute walk to work. So I would give it an A. But in general, its a pretty great hotel in terms of location. It’s literally on top of the Thong Lor BTS station, and just a few minutes from all the great shops, restaurants and bars of Thong Lor on Soi 55. This is a Marriott after all, and if Marriott knows how to do anything, its how to locate their city hotels.

Room: A

I was actually very surprised with how large the room was. A few things I always look at, especially in city hotels, is storage space and bathroom situation. This standard King room at the Marriott boasted a huge walk-in closet that I was not expecting along with a full on ‘shower room’ with a big, circular tub and wonderful rain shower. Throw in a nice desk and great, massive bed, and you have an ideal room for a week long stay. I just couldn’t believe it was $40 a night. Didn’t make sense at all. But COVID times, so who knows what it is normally.

Dining: A-

It’s pricey, but of course it is. It’s a Marriott after all. But the room service (pizza once, Indian once, and eggs Benedict once) all tasted fantastic. There’s a little stand out front serving chicken though, and I wish I discovered it earlier because this $1 piece of meat was the best thing I ate while staying at the Marriott. That’s not a knock on the hotel by any means, there’s just something about the flavor of street grilled chicken that gets me going. But, with all that said, the food options at the hotel are great, especially up on the roof at Octave.

Sometimes you just need a pizza man.

Gotta work off that pizza though.

Amenities: A

Damn the more I write about this hotel, the more impressed I am with it. The gym was really well sized, and had more than enough machines. There is a nice outdoor pool, albeit without much of a view thanks to the construction next door. But regardless, the pool and surrounding lounge space was a very nice place to go for a dip in the evening after work. Then there’s the rooftop, which is home to Octave, a bar and restaurant I mentioned in my Bangkok: Drink post. Throw in a spa as well, which I did not use, and you have plenty of ways to keep yourself entertained at the Marriott.

Service: B+

It just didn’t feel personal at all. I was there for a week and didn’t have any interactions with the staff at all. There was no attempt at it either. BUT, they did leave a cute little handwritten note on my mirror in my room when I checked in, which I definitely appreciated. But yeah, all in all, not much to write home about in terms of service.
