Biarritz

Screw Cannes. Screw Nice. Biarritz is where it’s at.

This town has flown relatively under the radar, but was once the hometown of French royalty (and still is, seeing as my girlfriend calls this place home). Here’s what you should do while visiting Biarritz.

Take a road trip to Spain

Ironic that the first thing on my list of things to do in Biarritz is to leave Biarritz but regardless, the Basque country is an absolute gem. This part of the world has be the most beautiful scenery, exquisite food and fascinating history of any place out there. So, taking a trip and seeing Bidart, Saint Jean de Luz, and ending up in Spain in San Sebastian is absolutely worth it. Grab a drink at the Place Louis XIV and enjoy the people watching before continuing your drive.

Go to a winery

You’re in France, it’s kind of a must. We ended up at the Jurancon region, trying several wineries. We spent the most time at the Cave de Gan. We had a slightly more special experience given the family connections (everyone knows everyone in this part of the world), so it was just a blast.

Stroll on the promenade

Walking between the Hotel du Palais and the Casino on the boardwalk is absolutely beautiful. Stop for a crepe, pop a squat on a bench and watch the beautiful people of France go about their day. Then continue on and walk all the way to the Rocher de la Vierge, a set of islands off the coast connected by dramatic bridges that make for an incredible viewpoint over the Basque Riviera, if I may call it that.

Eat at Chez Albert

My girlfriend’s family has gone hear for generations, so that should tell you all you need to know. Great foods, fun vibes, and a gorgeous view to go along with too much wine. What more could you ask for.

Go to the aquarium (for a drink)

We grabbed an early afternoon glass of wine at Olatua Biarritz, complete with sweeping views over the dramatic tip of the Biarritz coastline.

Spend the afternoon at Plage de Port Vieux

This beach is smaller and more protected than the larger main beach. There are no waves and the rocks around the edges make for some fun cliff jumping when the tide is right. It may get more crowded because it is a smaller beach, but its worth it. Also, grab lunch at the Rooftop Bar directly behind the beach when you’re tired from tanning.

Visit Bayonne

This town is awesome. Famous for the Fete de Bayonne, the world’s third largest festival, its a quaint town about 15 minutes drive from Biarritz with great chocolate, dining and history (heard of the Bayonette? Or the Espadrilles shoes?)

Hit the Casino

It isn’t Vegas, but its still a good time. Go in, put your money on black, then take your winnings and buy a drink. That’s what we did, and it was a great success *Borat voice*.

Surf (if you know how)

I don’t surf (gasp, the California kid can’t surf), but Biarritz is famous for its surfing. Having both the best big and small waves for experts and first-timers alike, surfing in Biarritz is a great idea.
