Galway - The Gateway to the Cliffs of Moher
Mixed opinion ‘review’ here. It’s a very cute town. But we didn’t notice the parking rules and not only did we get a ticket, but we got booted as well. Booted! For being parked for 2 hours! That bullshit aside, it really is a cute town, and I highly recommend it exclusively for its more convenient access to the iconic Cliffs of Moher.
Where to stay: The g Hotel
For being a hotel in Galway off the side of a strip mall with a grocery store, this is a pretty damn cool hotel. We didn’t spend much time in the hotel at all but the rooms were great and the architecture and interior design of the building itself was rather impressive. It may not be centrally located, but it is the only luxury hotel option in Galway, plus not to mention it what rather cheap for all the amenities provided. But I’m spending way too long on this hotel because we literally just slept here and left in the morning (parking is free too, so yay).
Where to get a cute, home-style meal with a view: Ard Bia
This place feels like a little home, and the food matches (except better, no offense). The view of the river mouth is fantastic as well, if you’re lucky enough to get a spot by one of the small windows.
Where to stroll for an afternoon: William Street
Ard Bia marks the south end of this street, which really is the entirety of this little town. The street has a little bit of everything when it comes to Irish culture, from fur coats to whiskey distilleries to Guinness bars. Unfortunately, it was raining like a mother fu^*er while we were there, so we didn’t get much of an enjoyable day.
But at the end of the day, you come to Galway because of the Cliffs of Moher. An hour and a half drive from Galway (rather than a 3.5 hour drive from Dublin), the Cliffs are truly a natural marvel. Words do not do the 700+ foot cliffs justice. Just get there early, stick to the paths, hang with the cows, and enjoy at least a full day here. Plus, keep an eye out for the puffins!
We’ll let photos do the rest of the talking.
