Zurich
A luxuriously boring lakeside enclave with spectacular views, wonderful Christmas markets and a ridiculously frustrating public transportation system - here’s what Zurich has to offer.
Where to stay: Neues Schloss Privat Hotel Zurich, Autograph Collection
This is a brand new property with great service, a sleek and modern design, comfortable rooms that are sizable enough, and a fantastic daily breakfast. Plus, the location is within easy walking distance to a majority of Zurich’s sites, so what’s not to love.
Where to get beer, cheese or coffee in a hundred year old room: Cafe Bar Odeon
Located just beside the opera house is this legendary joint. Its right in the heart of old town, serves great beers, cheeses, and coffees, the design is marvelously grand, and the service is wonderful. This was our first stop together in Zurich, and it was a great one indeed.
Where to get wet: Rhine Falls
This is the largest waterfall in Europe by volume of water, and it really does not disappoint. There are several viewpoints around the falls, including one smack in the middle during the summer. And its only a 45 minute train ride from Zurich, so it’s perfect for a half day excursion!
Where to escape for a day: Lucerne
Located just an hour train ride from Zurich is one of the most beautiful cities in the entire world. Lucerne is an absolute gem to enjoy for the day - but as beautiful as it is, I would stay there for two days maximum. Key places to see in Lucerne are:
Lucerne Chapel Bridge (the oldest wood truss bridge in the world)
Glacier Garden + Lion Monument
Hofkirche St. Leodegar
Lunch with mulled wine at Hotel Des Alpes
And, of course, as is the case with any European city, just roam the old town.
Where to watch a light show on a National Museum: Swiss National Museum
During the winter months, Zurich puts on a light show inside the National Museum, and it is a wonderful event to witness - plus there are plenty of food stalls and pop-up bars to go around.
